barnowl assumes joining MUC successful

Description
Because of last night's issues with logging in to the mit.edu jabber server, I joined barnowl@conference.mit.edu from my gmail jabber account. This morning, after I logged back in with my mit.edu account, I attempted to join barnowl@conference.mit.edu with the same nick to see what would happen:
Thu Aug 16 10:23:09 2007 Jabber: 409 Please choose a different nickname.
However, if I run jmuc presence -a:
Conferences for kchen@mit.edu/owl: JIDs present in barnowl@conference.mit.edu [empty list]
To verify that my mit.edu account was not in the MUC, I attempted to send to it:
jwrite barnowl@conference.mit.edu -a kchen@mit.edu
OWL ADMIN
Error 403 sending to barnowl@conference.mit.edu Forbidden
If I run jmuc part barnowl@conference.mit.edu -a kchen@mit.edu, the MUC does disappear from the jmuc presence -a list. (It also seems I can specify any random MUC I want, even if I'm not in it, and barnowl will tell me that I've left it.)
