OS X Unicode input gives “Unable to handle keypress”

Description
Several OS X users have reported that typing or pasting Unicode into BarnOwl fails with “Unable to handle keypress” errors, even though they have no such trouble with other terminal applications.

A user reports that this setting isn’t there in OS X 10.4. Anyway, we should figure out what keycodes the terminal is sending for Unicode by default.

Apparently, unchecking “escape non-ASCII input” in Terminal.app makes it work.
